Avalanche rescue practice on the Mt. Hood National Forest

AIARE Avalanche Rescue is a one-day stand alone course that is intended to be retaken on a regular basis in order to keep abreast of best practices in rescue techniques and gear. We will begin the day by learning the basics of companion rescue, and spend the rest of the day expanding our skill set with advanced topics and realistic scenario practice to further improve our skills. Returning participants may notice new changes in rescue practices and/or technology.

Each participant will have the opportunity to receive professional coaching on their rescue skills, and will receive a rescue card acknowledging the completion date. These skills are like other outdoor skills such as Wilderness First Aid or Swiftwater Rescue – they're perishable and must be practiced and kept up-to-date to have any chance at being effective in a real emergency.

AIARE recommends that all backcountry travelers keep their skills current by taking an Avalanche Rescue course and receiving a rescue card at least every other year. If you are pursuing additional avalanche education, Avalanche Rescue is a prerequisite for the AIARE 2 and PRO 1 courses.

A sno-park pass is required to park at any sno-park located on the Mt. Hood National Forest. We will provide you with a sno-park pass for free, for the duration of the course, if you do not have one.
